So this time around my estimated due date was August 24th. Since I had gone two days early with "Minion", I figured I'd go a little early this time too. My guess was on the 19th or 20th since full moon would be on the 18th and this was my second baby.

One of the biggest struggles for pregnant women is how to get by while avoiding harmful chemicals. There are so many things we use in our daily lives that are potentially harmful to unborn babies. Many of these were things I didn't even consider until suddenly I couldn't use them anymore in my first pregnancy. And of course, there were other pregnancy side effects that needed to be treated that left me wondering, how?
So here is my list of things that have helped me survive the not so bright spots of pregnancy based on suggestions I received from my midwife or other wise women. It's amazing how the generations past have so many survival secrets that we rarely think to ask about.

When I got pregnant the first time, I immediately watched The Business of Being Born. That was literally a life-changing point for me given my current career path and I feel it should be required viewing for every pregnant woman because the points it makes are incredible. I love the facts it shows on how beneficial having a child as naturally as possible is while acknowledging that some labors do need to be handled by a hospital because of complications. Plus watching it helped reaffirm my decision and prepare me for some of the negativity we faced in that pregnancy.

5 Frequently Used Skills You Might Not Realize Your Doula Rocks

2/16/2016

Last night as I spent the night sleeping on my friend's couch as she recovered from a medical procedure, I realized that it wasn't very different then something I regularly do as a doula. In fact sleeping in random places is a skill I had long before becoming a doula and has just made it easier to get the bits of rest I might find I need. This got me thinking about what skills I find myself using with every client that people might not think of when it comes to doula work.

As an Etsy shop owner myself, I love supporting the independent businesses that make their home there. When it comes to shopping for maternity clothes you have dozens of mainstream options that are really great and convenient. But if you like to find a few pieces that you probably won't see on another pregnant mama in your neighborhood then peruse some of these shops.

The Advantages of Crowd Birthing

1/19/2016

There have been many fantastic articles about limiting the number of visitors you have at your birth. And many of the arguments for this view are very sound. Since becoming a doula, I’ve found many of my colleagues agree with Family Psychologist, Daniel Chable, who believes only those present for the conception should be at the birth (with the exception of medical and support staff). For them it’s a matter of being able to preserve the birth environment as a quiet, sacred space without conflicting emotions and opinions being presented to the laboring mother. As a woman who embraced the crowd birth experience, I have a different view of the matter.

Why I Announced My Pregnancies Early

I left you at the beginning of December with a confession about our TTC journey. It turns out that our two week wait that cycle ended with a positive pregnancy test. A few positives to be exact!

When I got the BFP with our son in 2013, I went to the doctor's the next day to confirm. This was after I had already gotten a false positive a few months earlier so I was a little gun shy about believing it. When the Doctor came in to tell me my results and saw my excited expression she proceed to tell me "1 in 4 women experience a miscarriage in the first 8 weeks so you might consider waiting to get too excited and telling people until after that." I haven't been back to see that doctor since then and we announced our pregnancy publicly a few days later. But those words were echoed by a few people choosing to express some loving concern.
So why do I still announce my pregnancies early?
